3mm knitting needles
Gauge: 29 sts to 10cm (approx 7.5 sts to 1 inch)

Begin with lower edging:
Using provisional cast on, cast on 26 sts and work 85 repeats of edging pattern. Leave sts on a
holder.
With right side facing, pick up and k510 sts along straight edge, inc 1 st in centre of row (511 sts)
Work 4 rows garter stitch.
Next row: purl, leaving last 14 sts on a holder (497 sts)
Next row: work row 1 of miniature leaf st, leaving last 14 sts on a holder (483 sts)
Next 23 rows: beg with row 2, work in miniature leaf st pattern.
Next 5 rows: garter stitch, dec 1 st in centre of first row (482 sts)
Next row: purl
Begin working in pattern panels:
Row 1: *k8, work 24 sts in chain st, (31 sts in spider patt, 24 sts in chain patt) 3 times, k8, *

Next 6 rows: garter st.
Cast off loosely but neatly (using a larger size needle if necessary)
To Finish:
Sew in ends. Dress shawl by washing and pinning out to size.
